Dear Military and Veteran Supporter,
You're invited to attend several events happening across Nevada in the months of March and April. They are all designed to either remember and honor or better serve our military and veteran communities.
The biggest event is the National Vietnam War Veterans Day remembrance, where ceremonies will be held across the country.
In Las Vegas, there will be a wreath-laying ceremony at the Las Vegas Veterans Memorial in front of the Grant Sawyer Building, located at 555 East Washington Avenue, beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, March 29, 2018. The general public is invited but we are hoping to get a "head count" to ensure adequate seating. Please pre-register to "save your seat" by going here: http://bit.ly/2EaXTFU . You are encouraged to park at Cashman Center across just across the street from the Grant Sawyer building. If you are a Vietnam veteran, thank you for your service!
Another Vietnam War Veterans Day ceremony will be held in Carson City on March 31, 2018 at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Mills Park beginning at 5:00 p.m. Additionally, ceremonies are being planned in Elko and Winnemucca. We will be sure to pass along more details as soon as they become available.
Earlier in the month, the Nevada Department of Veterans Services (NDVS) will host a FREE Veteran Home Buying and Preparation Seminar. It will be held on Saturday, March 3, 2018 at the Las Vegas VA Medical Center in the first floor Auditorium. The Medical Center is located at 6900 N. Pecos Road, North Las Vegas. The Seminar will run from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Pre-register here: http://bit.ly/2EdoZfr
The seminar is aimed at veterans or military members who want to learn about the programs available to buy a home, including, but not limited to, first time home buyers.
NDVS will host two Legislative Symposia. The first will be held in Reno March 24th, with the location to be determined soon. Join us for coffee at 8:00 a.m. The program kicks off at 8:30 a.m. and will run through 11:30 a.m. Pre-register here: http://bit.ly/2GQODFn
On March 31, the second symposium will be held in Las Vegas at the VA Southern Nevada Healthcare System, 1st Floor Auditorium, located at 6900 North Pecos Road. Join us for coffee at 8:00 a.m. The program kicks off at 8:30 a.m. and will run through 11:30 a.m. Pre-register here: http://bit.ly/2nB1SSn
The symposia helps identify and understand the issues and concerns of Nevada’s veterans, military members, their families and veteran advocates for the purpose of developing a list of prioritized legislative recommendations. It has been a very successful process. In 2017, 26 veteran bills were signed into law by Governor Brian Sandoval. Every state-wide veteran/military priority identified through this process back in 2016 was legislatively addressed by the Governor or Nevada’s lawmakers.
Finally, NDVS will host a FREE Nevada Veterans Advocate (NVA) Training Workshop on April 7th and 8th at the Sunset Station Hotel and Casino, located at 1301 Sunset Road, in Henderson. The two-day event will run from 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. each day. The workshop sets participants on the path to becoming a certified NVA, who can assist veterans and their families in connecting to benefits, resources and services earned through military service. Pre-registration is available here: http://bit.ly/2GUIMPi. Vendors who support or serve veterans can pre-register here: http://bit.ly/2ElZ1qa.
For more information or questions about any of the above events, feel free to call me at 702-283-9827 or email me at taylorm@veterans.nv.gov .
We look forward to seeing you in the months ahead!
Len Yelinek
