Spirit of '45 Honors WWII Generation
Chapter 587 - Arkansas

Invocation was offered by Marvin Mendenhall of American Legion Post 31, and a wreath presentation was conducted by
Ralph C. Ferguson, Commander of The Military Order of the Purple Heart Chapter 587. Mendenhall said he is proud of the U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith and pointed out it is the final resting place of Fort Smith native and World War II hero Brigadier Gen. William O. Darby, founder of the U.S. Army Rangers.
There are 65 World War II veterans who are members of American Legion Post 31, Mendenhall added. "Men and women who fought in World War II are known as the greatest generation," Nagy said. "They answered the call to save the world from the most ruthless military machines ever assembled, intent on conquering the world. Now in the twilight of their years, these men and women are modest. They don't think they did anything special, because everybody else was doing the same thing."
