Happy Birthday US Army!

Military Order of the Purple Heart Salutes its Army Veterans on the 240th Birthday of the US Army June 14, 1775 marks the date that the Continental Congress, voting in secret session, reached the momentous decision to establish a "Continental Army."   Because of the secrecy of the meeting, the records indicate only that the Congress agreed to undertake the raising of ten companies of riflemen, whose enlistment would be for one year only, and appointed a committee (including Washington and Schuyler) to draft rules and regulations for the government of the army.  Until then, loosely organized militias and individual patriots bore the brunt of the opposition to British occupation of the colonies.   Many of the initial units were formed from the estimated 10,000 men that made up existing New England troops, plus another 5,000 men from New York and Connecticut who were defending various points in New York.    This year, we celebrate 240 years of selfless service to the nation. "Selfless service is at the core of what it means to be a Soldier - putting the welfare of others ahead of oneself. The willingness of our Soldiers to place themselves in harm's way and to protect our nation's freedoms is what makes us the greatest Armed Forces in the world.  The men and women who have made up the US Army have served proudly, faithfully, and selflessly for 240 years, and remain steadfast in their commitment to protect and defend until today."   In the 240 years since the establishment of the US Army, it is estimated that more than 1.4 million Americans gave their lives, plus another 1.5 million men and women who were wounded in combat against the enemies of the United States of America.  This selfless service and willingness to sacrifice one's own life to defend our nation and the freedoms that all American's enjoy is what marks those who proudly wear the Purple Heart medal as true American Patriots. The renaming ceremony took place on May 2nd, at the Department of South Carolina Annual State Convention, with special guests Dale and Ann Hampton. Bravo Zulu, Patriot! Military Order of the Purple Heart is Proud to Salute our Nation's Armed Forces May 16, 2015 The Military Order of the Purple Heart is proud to salute the patriotic and selfless men and women who proudly wear the uniforms of our nation's Armed Forces. Each servicemember, wherever he or she may be, whatever his or her task, contributes directly and importantly to the defense of this great nation. The task of each is the same -- to protect and defend the freedoms which underlie the greatness of America." The origin of Armed Forces Day in 1949 was to help promote an increased public awareness of the unification of the Armed Forces under a single Department of Defense, an understanding of what type of job is performed, and the role of the military in civilian life. Over the years it has become a day for military bases to open their doors to the public and to show "state-of- the-art" equipment to the civilian population they were protecting. It has also become a day to honor and acknowledge the people who serve in and with the Armed Forces of the United States. In 1952, a New York Times article reported: "This is the day on which we have the welcome opportunity to pay special tribute to the men and women of the Armed Forces ... to all the individuals who are in the service of their country all over the world. Armed Forces Day won't be a matter of parades and receptions for a good many of them. They will all be in line of duty and some of them may give their lives in that duty." In 1962, President John F. Kennedy warned: "Word to the Nation: Guard zealously your right to serve in the Armed Forces, for without them, there will be no other rights to guard." He added, "Our Servicemen and women are serving throughout the world as guardians of peace--many of them away from their homes, their friends and their families. They are visible evidence of our determination to meet any threat to the peace with measured strength and high resolve. They are also evidence of a harsh but inescapable truth--that the survival of freedom requires great cost and commitment, and great personal sacrifice." On this Armed Forces Day, at home and abroad, our men and women in uniform continue to demonstrate their loyalty and dedication to defending American ideals under some of the most difficult and trying circumstances in our nation's history. Thanks to their determined spirit of patriotism and professionalism, our country has the world's most powerful and unified defense team, employing its forces in the constant quest for peace and freedom for all the nations of the world." Many have heard the saying, "Poor is the Nation that has no heroes, but beggared is the Nation that has and forgets them." 
On this Memorial Day, let us pause to remember those who gave the last full measure of devotion for our Nation.  Let us remember the special nobility and grace of those who donned the uniforms of our country and sacrificed their lives during times of conflict.  Let us remember—as we renew our commitment to honor those we have lost—that, every day, dedicated men and women put their lives on the line to protect all of us.  We owe them all our deepest gratitude.
Over 70 years ago, on June 6, 1944, 175,000 American, Canadian, and British troops spearheaded the Allies’ assault against the forces of tyranny threatening millions of people across Europe.  Exposed to devastating fire on the beaches of Normandy, those brave souls established a beachhead, began the Allied march across Europe, and sent a message of hope across the continent.  That message, writ large by the hands of heroes, signaled Freedom’s triumph over evil and the preface to peace for a world too long at war.
From the opening rounds of the American Revolution, through the devastation of the Civil War, through World War I, World War II, and Korea, through Vietnam and Desert Storm, to those who have fought—and fight still today—so hard and valiantly in Afghanistan and Iraq, more than a million American Servicemembers have paid the ultimate price to secure the blessings of liberty for our Nation and our allies around the world.
As many of our National Cemetery Administration employees prepare our cemeteries, our national shrines, and work on Memorial Day activities to welcome our guests, I encourage all of us to show our support for Veterans and honor those who have passed by attending or participating in an event at a national cemetery near you.  For a complete listing, please visit: http://www.cem.va.gov/CEM/cems/2015_Memorial_Day_Ceremonies.asp
At VA, we honor those lost in the way we care for those who returned home—and for their families and Survivors.  Thank you for all that you do for Veterans.  It is a privilege to serve with each one of you in fulfilling our sacred mission.
