Patriots and Friends,

March 30 is a very special day for a generation of veterans who had served in their Nation's Armed Forces with honor, valor and a patriotic commitment to defend the values and freedoms that make this country so unique. They were the veterans of the Vietnam War who, rather than receiving a hero's welcome home, became the scapegoats of a divisive crossfire of negative public sentiment and disapproval of the U.S. Government's involvement in an unpopular war. In many cases their sacrifice went unappreciated, dismissed or was even insulted. Over the almost 15-year course of the War, more than 3,400,000 Americans served in support of U.S military operations in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, while more than 58,000 members of the Armed Forces gave their lives and more than 300,000 were wounded.

It was not until 2011 that Vietnam Veterans would finally be granted the recognition and reward they had earned. That year, the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution designating March 30th of each year as "Welcome Home Vietnam Veterans Day," almost 38 years to the day of the final withdrawal of U.S. combat and combat-support troops from Vietnam, Though long overdue, all Americans should pause today to recognize and thank Vietnam veterans -- America praises their sense of duty, unselfish devotion and courageous willingness to put their country first.

America owes these patriotic veterans a great debt. It's because of veterans of all generations that the flame of freedom burns brightly today throughout the world. Let our Nation resolve that no veteran will ever again return to an America unappreciative of one's service and sacrifice.

To all my fellow Vietnam veterans, on behalf of the entire Military Order of the Purple Heart, thank you for your service and sacrifice, and welcome home my brothers.

Yours in Patriotism,

Bob Puskar

FW: Robert, let's end veteran suicide

From: postmaster@dvnf.2dialog.com
Subject: Robert, let's end veteran suicide

22 veterans each day on average commit suicide. It's been this way for a while now, and more needs to be done to prevent it.
The Department of Veterans Affairs recently announced new steps to continue the fight to end veteran suicide, including:
  • Increased mental health screening via regional tele-mental health hubs
  • Enhanced work with the Department of Defense to help veterans in transition
  • Launching a new study on the impacts of deployment and combat on veterans
  • Using predictive modeling to help increase early intervention for at-risk veterans
These are all positive steps forward, but increased prevention of veteran suicide starts with you, Robert. Veterans who are contemplating taking their own lives are in a particularly delicate state, and feel there is no other way out.
I want you to please pass this email along to anyone you know, because you never know who it might reach. It could even save a life. If you know a veteran who's experiencing difficulty, or who might consider harming himself, please refer them to the Veterans Crisis Line now.
In 2015, Disabled Veterans National Foundation funded 34 different programs and initiatives, most of which were geared in some way towards increasing veterans' mental health. Our next round of grant funding will be announced at the end of April, and will also be focused on the mental and physical health of veterans.
You can help to support this effort by clicking here.
Thank you for your commitment to supporting veterans. Together, I hope we can end suicide for the men and women who've protecting us from danger at home and abroad.
Sincerely,
Joseph VanFonda (USMC SgtMaj Ret.)

Combat Veterans Get Telephonic Health Care Application Option

Accelerates Enrollment of Combat Veterans; All Veterans to Get Option on July 5, 2016
WASHINGTON – The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced today that it has amended its enrollment regulations to allow Veterans to complete applications for enrollment in VA health care by telephone without the need for a signed paper application. The change is effective immediately for Combat Veterans and will be effective July 5, 2016, for all Veterans.

This phased implementation accelerates VA's effort to enroll all Combat Veterans with pending applications as part of its ongoing Veterans Enrollment Rework Project. The VA is working to complete the review and rework of all pending health enrollment records for living and deceased Veterans this summer. Veterans can view the amended regulation on the Federal Register website here.

"This improvement to our Veterans' experience is one we can implement now, and it's the right thing to do for Veterans," said VA Deputy Secretary Sloan D. Gibson, "Enrolling all 31,000 Combat Veterans with pending applications is the top priority in our effort to fix our enrollment system. Our analysis of our current application process convinced me we could enroll Veterans more quickly using this method, particularly Combat Veterans and those who are transitioning from active duty to Veteran status," Gibson said.

By adding this telephone application option to VA's regulations, VA will now offer three ways to enroll.  This change provides Veterans an even more convenient way to apply for enrollment, in addition to the paper VA Form 10-10 EZ and online enrollment application process. With publication in the Federal Register today, Combat Veterans may now apply by phone. All other Veterans may apply by phone starting on July 5, 2016.

When Veterans choose to enroll, VA offers an enhancement to their enrollment experience through "Welcome to VA" (W2VA).  Veterans enrolled since July 1, 2015 have received a personal introduction to VA health care services, programs and resources to help them become more familiar with VA's services. In addition, VA sends each new enrollee an introductory letter and personalized handbook in the mail. W2VA enhances communication by reaching out to newly enrolled Veterans through personal phone calls upon enrollment, providing assistance with health care inquiries and assisting with their initial appointment at their preferred VA healthcare facility.

For more information, Veterans can contact the Health Eligibility Center Enrollment and Eligibility Division toll free at 1-855-488-8440.
